Farm Life
At Manor Farm we produce about 1.5 to 2m. Litres of high quality milk per year from 250 plus pedigree jersey cows. this milk and cream is used for the production of our Cow Shack Ice Cream and also sold in the milk vending machine next door, but the majority of this milk is sold to Longley Farm Dairy nearby at Holmfirth for the production of their superb dairy products.
Through the winter months the cows live indoors and eat a diet weighed mixed and produced on the farm from food conserved from the summertime, when grass starts to grow in the spring the cows go out to graze, all the organic manure from the cattle is recycled back on the land so to regenerate and fertilize the next crops and keep the soil alive and healthy, because organic rich soil collects and hold far more carbon.
The herd are all pedigree Jerseys and live a long and happy life under the care of our Herd Manager Ruby Felton. She looks after the health, well fair, breeding and day to day management of all the cows and young stock.
The cows are milked Twice a day every day of the year at 5am and 3pm and all the replacement stock are reared in house to prevent bringing in infections.
